The day-to-day operations of the Parker Shoe Service on East 18th Street in Paterson, New Jersey provided inspiration and are the subject of the exhibit What Work Is. "These photographs are more than just portraits, gatherings, various still lives, or solitary moments, they are about community, labor and humility," Juan Giraldo, the photographer, observed.
Mr. Giraldo was born in Columbia and raised in Paterson. "I come from a family of laborers and, I have learned the value of hard work from both my parents," Juan Giraldo noted. About his photography and this exhibit, Mr. Giraldo says, "Ever since I picked up my first camera I have found it important to capture the dignity of anonymity, in people that don't have all the breaks in life or have been forgotten. I found that there is something holy and noble in repairing shoes, working in a mill, building a home, or fixing a car."
Museum visiting hours: Wednesday through Saturday, 1-4 PM and by appointment. Group tours are welcome, please call ahead to reserve a date and time, (973) 595-7953.
